Griezmann: "The Champions League final hurt the most"
"We had two weeks to prepare for it and you have these images in your head of how you'll celebrate with your friends... and then we lost on penalties." Atlético vs Real Madrid
Antoine Griezmann has said that he is happy overall with how 2016 worked out for him at club and international level, although he admitted that the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid “hurt more” than losing in the Euro 2016 showpiece to Portugal, because of the greater time for preparation Atlético were afforded ahead of the game.
“It was really tough in the few days after both, but as they were both very important the Champions League hurt the most because we had two weeks to prepare for it and you have these images in your head of how you'll celebrate with your friends... and then we lost on penalties,” the France striker said in an interview with GQ España.
Ballon d'Or
Griezmann’s standout year with club and country served to see him shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi. “I’m very happy to have been nominated together with them and very happy with my 2016. I hope that next year will be even better. I’m very proud of what I achieved with Atleti and France, hopefully we can continue in the same way.”
