Robert Lewandowski has amditted that swapping Bayern Munich for the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona wouldn’t have provided a “breakthrough” in his career.

The Polish striker was heavily linked with a move away from the Allianz Arena last summer but effectively ended any speculation about his future when in December he signed a new contact at the German club until 2021.

"Bayern is on par with Madrid and Barcelona”

Real Madrid were one of the club’s reportedly interested in signing the 28-year old before he committed himself to another four seasons in Bavaria, with the player’s agent revealing he had been to the Bernabéu last year for talks. AS even reported in June that Lewandowski was ready to force a move to Los Blancos as contract negotiations with Bayern stalled.

However, Lewandowski ultimately decided to stay in Munich, telling Bild in an interview published on Wednesday that he ultimately felt a move away would not present any progress.

"Bayern is one of the best clubs in the world and is on par with Madrid and Barcelona,” he said. “A club change would not give me a breakthrough in my career because here we can win every title. Also, I feel totally comfortable in Munich.”

The forward arrived at Bayern in the 2014/2015 season after making a name for himself at Borussia Dortmund. He’s scored 89 goals in 125 games for Der FCB.
