Ex-footballer Diego Maradona has been questioned at his hotel in Madrid over an alleged assault on his partner, police sources have confirmed to EFE.

In Madrid for Champions League clash

One-time Argentina captain Maradona is currently in the Spanish capital to attend former club Napoli's Champions League last-16 first leg with Real Madrid.

The manager of the Hotel Mirasierra Suites is understood to have alerted local law enforcement authorities early on Wednesday morning to a possible incident in the room occupied by the 56-year-old and girlfriend Rocío Oliva.

According to radio station Cadena SER, it was Oliva herself who telephoned reception to advise hotel staff of an altercation.

Police officers and medical services are said to have arrived on the scene of the alleged incident at around 8:30 CET. Oliva did not wish to be examined and has not filed an official complaint against Maradona.

Diario AS has spoken to the hotel's operations manager, who could neither confirm nor deny the events due to laws on client data protection.

Confused about the media storm

Diego Maradona was left baffled by the media reports of the alleged disturbance involving him and his girlfriend and said the police were not contacted. The claims prompted Maradona to release a statement via his official Facebook page, in which the 1986 World Cup winner denied any complaint had been made to the police.

"I want to inform that I am in Madrid enjoying my family, and waiting for Napoli to play in the Champions League," Maradona said. "My lawyer Matias Morla contacted the Spanish authorities. There are no complaints and nobody was able to explain to me the reason for this media show.

"I'm having a great time, let them tell their stories..."
