Sergio Ramos suffered a bruised right hip in Real Madrid’s Champions League 2nd Round 1st leg win over Napoli on Wednesday night, leaving him and a serious doubt for Saturday’s visit of LaLiga rivals Espanyol.
The centre-back underwent tests on Thursday morning after taking a heavy knock against the Italian side, causing him to be replaced by Pepe on 70 minutes.
Although the examinations on the Los Blancos captain revealed no serious problems, Ramos now looks almost certain to miss this weekend’s league action at the Bernabéu.
Ramos explained in the mixed-zone following the Napoli victory: "I suffered a blow and I hurt my hip and adductor. I held on as long I could until I thought the result was good. If it hadn’t been a Champions League match, I would have asked to come before.”
With Pepe having made his own comeback from injury when he replaced Ramos on Wednesday, Zidane can now count on the Portuguese for cover if needed, while fellow central defenders Varane and Nacho will also be available for selection.
