Bayern Munich 1-2 Real Madrid: match report

You could call this a game of two halves but that might suggest that Real Madrid were outplayed in the first half which they most certainly weren’t. Arturo Vidal sent a thundering header beyond Keylor Navas after 25 minutes of what was a to-and-fro battle before that and Bayern grabbed a slight grasp of proceeding from that point on in the first half. But Real Madrid were always testing Bayern and never really looked like they deserved to be trailing.

Dani Carvajal was penalised for a hand-ball inside the box that turned out to have hit his chest, but Arturo Vidal drove the penalty high and over the crossbar on the stroke of half-time as two of Europe's premier teams continued to stand toe-to-toe.

The second half took on different complexion almost immediately when Ronaldo scored within two minutes of the restart. He turned home a Carvajal cross and Bayern's defense had been breached. From that point on, Real Madrid started to dominate their hosts and if it wasn't for some excellent saves by Neuer, from Benzema and Ronaldo on a couple of occasions, this one could have been a lot more damaging to the reigning German Bundsliga Champions.

Javi Martinez was sent off for a second yellow after two quick fouls on Ronaldo and Bayern were going to have to score another one with one less player on the field than their Spanish opponents.

Ronaldo must have felt as though it wasn't his night but on 77, that all changed. He bagged his 100 goal in European competition when an inch-perfect Asensio pass fell at his feet and he poked it beyond Neuer despite the German getting a foot to it. He later said his two goals were "incredible".

Real Madrid continued to push for a third but it never came. They won't mind too much, however, as they go back to Spain in just six days time and will welcome Bayern Munich and their former manager, Carlo Ancelotti, to the Bernabeú with their eye on a semi-final spot.

It looks like Lewandowski will play in the second leg, Tomás Roncero says he's a huge threat to Real Madrid.

Here's Carlo Ancelotti's thoughts on the second leg at the Bernabéu.

Bayern Munich 1-2 Real Madrid: second half

FT: Real Madrid take a 1-2 lead back to the Santiago Bernabeú.

Min 90+3 | Carvajal whips a cross in and Ronalo......looks like he got hit by a sniper as he falls over in the box. He caught his foot in the ground and fell over. Could have been three.

Min 90+2 | Real Madrid have the ball in the back of the net. Ramos with the header from a free but he was coming from an offside position and the linesman had his flag straight up! That really would have been icing on the cake.

Real Madrid substitution: Mateo Kovacic replaces Luka Modric.

Min 90 | Vidal receives a yellow card for a foul on James Rodriguez. The Chilean has not stopped all night and his frustration boils over in the end. Not a bad area of the field to whip one in. Ramos Time?

Min 88 | Marcelo crosses and it falls to Ronaldo, who misjudges the way the ball will fall, and he lets it go under his foot. Could have been a good chance as he was in a great area in front of goal.

Min 85 | Can Real Madrid push their lead out to two away goals. Bayern breaking sporadically but have nobody up front, no target and very little chance of getting a goal, it looks like. Navas has barely been tested in the second half.

Real Madrid substitution: James replaces Karim Benzema.

Min 83 | Carvajal weaves his way into the penalty area after some lovely footwork. The ball comes to Marcelo, who hits it first time as it lands to Carajal. He had strayed just offside.

Min 82 | Robben with his trademark cut inside but his left-footed effort is tame.

Bayern Munich substitution: Kingsley Coman replaces Thomas Mueller.

Min 80 | Ronaldo clips one into the box and it beats everyone except Marcelo, who takes it down with his chest. He drills a left-footed effort just wide of the post.

Min 79 | Modric has a go from distance. Neuer gets down to save it. Routine for the keeper. Real Madrid, however, are thirsty for more here.

Min 77 | GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! Real Madrid go 1-2 up. Marcelo lays it off to Casemiro. He gives it to Kroos, who gives it to Asensio. the substitute whips it in and Ronaldo gets a foot on it to give them the lead. Bayern need to respond now, but how do they with just ten men.

Min 75 | Ronaldo rejected by Neuer. He has become a human wall. That was point blank range. If it wasn't for the big German, this could be three or four to one. Ronaldo can't believe he has been foiled again.

Min 73 | Benzema with a big toe on the ball and he fires it towards goal. Neuer rejects him.

Min 72 | Asensio with a lovely ball in across the box. Benzema gets a head to it but it's wide. So close. Real Madrid absolutely dominating now.

Min 70 | Mueller misses again as Boateng swings a long pass his way. He has really struggled today and Bayern have missed Lewandowski to no end.

Min 69 | Ronaldo has a shot that is half-blocked as Neuer reaches out to grab it.

Min 68 | Robben does everything in his power to cut in, which he does, and get a shot away, but he can't as Modric is waiting for him. He passes to Bernat, who brings it to the endline and tries to get it across. Real Madrid clear.

Min 66 | No, it was Ramos who tried to bend it around the wall. Inches wide.

Bayern Munich substitution: Douglas Costa replaces Franck Ribery.

Min 65 | Sloppy from Ribery, who leaves his hand out and gets whistled for handball as he tries to control it on the edge of his own penalty area. Chance now for Ronaldo. It would suit a left-footer better but Ronaldo will fancy a crack at this.

Bayern Munich substitution: Xabi Alonso comes off and Juan Bernat replaces him.

Min 63 | Bayern were getting caught on the break so often as they looked for the goal to take the lead. Caught between a rock and a hard place now. Do they stick with what they have and hope that they can do something at the Bernabeú or go for broke here.

Min 61 | RED CARD! Real Madrid break as Benzema passes to Ronaldo. Javi Martinez dives in and catches the Portuguese with a flailing leg. Second yellow and Bayern are down to ten men.

Min 60 | Suggestion that Bale might have been injured.

Real Madrid substitution: Marco Asensio replaces Gareth Bale after almost an hour.

Min 58 | Javi Martinez fouls Ronaldo and he gets a yellow card. Similar to Alonso's foul on Modric.

Min 56 | Modric with a ball into Bale after some good work involving Carvajal down the right-hand side. Bale headers but Neuer gets a reflexive hand to it. What a save. Nearly 1-2 to Real Madrid.

Min 55 | Neither team looking after the ball as well anymore as it is really opening up.

Min 54 | Bayern on the attack but Javi Martinez gives a really poor ball to Vidal.

Min 53 | Alaba gets the ball across but Carvajal gets his body in the way and puts it out for a corner.

Min 52 | Mueller caught offside again. A lot closer than time and he's not happy.

Min 51 | Robben steps inside a challenge and does a reveerse pass to Mueller, who had strayed offside.

Min 51 | Bale down the left but his touch takes him away from goal. He squares it to Ronaldo but his touch takes the ball to a Bayern defender.

Min 50 | Ribery with a cross now from the endline. Real Madrid get it clear but Mueller was sitting and waiting for that one.

Min 49 | Real Madrid with all the possession now. In keeping with how the game has gone. Both sides want it and guard possession tightly and tend to keep it quiet well.

Min 47 | GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! Ronaldo finishes beyond Neuer. Casemiro sprays it out wide to Carvajal, who hits a cross with pace across the box. Ronaldo make sno mistakes as he hits it across Neuer.

Min 46 | Alonso penalised for a foul on Modric as he throws an arm around the Croatian to slow him down.

Min 46 | We are underway for the secnd half.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Real Madrid: first half summary

A very even game so far that Bayern Munich have started to slowly but surely dominate. Before Vidal's thunderous header, it was even in every aspect but since then Bayern have had the better chances and of possession.

The goal came via a corner that Bayern Munich have been clearly working on. Vidal seems to be the target for all of their set-pieces. Thiago swung it in and Vidal met it with a violent header to crash it to the roof of the net with the help of Navas.

They had a penalty when Carvajal was, wrongly, adjudged to have handled the ball in the box but Vidal struck it violently over the bar this time. Real Madrid are well in this game and have had chances. An away goal and they will fancy winning the second leg back at the Bernabeú, provided Bayern don't score another one, which is very possible.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Real Madrid: first half

Min 45+3 | Marcelo with a high cross. Neuer collects and it's half-time.

Min 45+2 | Bale into Benzema, who lays it off to the Welshman, as he curls one. Neuer sees it coming and shifts to the right of the goal before saving. Good move. Decent effort.

Min 45+1 | MISS! Justice has been served. Vidal absolutely launches it towards goal and it goes high into the Munich night sky. A mile over the bar. What a poor penalty.

Min 45 | PENALTY! Carvajal handles the ball after Ribery takes the ball down, threatens to shoot twice and then turns back before finally shooting. Very harsh penalty and booking as replays show Carvajal hit it with his shoulder.

Min 44 | Kroos receives a yellow card for a collision with Mueller after the big attacker headers the ball. He turns him around in the area. More clumsy than anything else.

Min 42 | Ronaldo picks it up outside the box. He turns, has a think about his options befor eunleashing a shot towards Neuer. Corner as the German boxes it away. From the corner, Kroos picks it up and cuts inside before driving a shot that flashes past the post. Neuer had his hands out as if he had it covered but I'm not so sure.

Min 42 | Quite even now in terms of shots. Bayern have five and Real Madrid have four. The problem for los Blancos is that the important one fell to Bayern.

Min 40 | So nearly two. Kroos gets sold a dummy by Robben as he skips past the German. He crosses and Vidal storms into the box and throws his head at it again. This time is goes just wide though. All Bayern now since the goal.

Min 39 | Alonso whips one out left and Alaba swings it in with his first touch. Real Madrid clear but only as far as Thiago. He plays it into Mueller but the German can't keep control of it and Real Madrid live to fight another day.

Min 38 | Casemiro is back on the field. He doesn't look comfortable but there's no way he is being subbed of just yet unless it's a serious injury. the problem might come if it stiffens up at half-time.

Min 36 | Touch and go whether Real Madrid's anchor man hobbles off.

Min 35 | A really strange sequence of events. Bayner on the attack. Vidal and Casemiro collide and the Brazilian stays down. Ribery picks up the ball, runs it to the endline and crosses, but Real Madrid clear.

Min 33 | Real Madrid chasing shadows now for the last few minutes. That is before launches one over the top for Alaba to chase. He can't get to it and Real Madrid can get the ball back.

Min 32 | Casemiro down in a heap now and breathing heavy. He looks to be winded. Marcelo rushes over to help him out and he is back up getting some water. Took a heavy fall on his chest after competing for the ball with Thiago. He goes off to gather himself and will play on.

Min 30 | Benzema with a cross down low that was rolling to Neuer but Boateng takes no chances and clears it.

Min 29 | Modric fouls Franck Ribery following a decent spell by Real Madrid. Bayern will try to control things now again. Real Madrid occasionally pressing the home side's defenders and goalkeeper but then sitting back. No need for them to panic just yet.

Min 27 | Ball into the box as Ronaldo receives contact and goes down. No penalty though.

Min 25 | GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! Arturto Vidal meets the header on the edge of the six-yard box and he drives the header home beyond Navas. He got a hand to it but he had no chance. Thiago with the cross.

Min 25 | Bayern starting to push all the right buttons now. Ribery has a shot that hits off Bale and goes out for another corner.

Min 23 | Alaba with an effort from outside the box. He swings his left foot at it but his pot shot doesn't trouble Keylor Navas.

Min 22 | No. Vidal was bring closely marked by Vidal. Marcelo gives it away then with a crazy pass that hits the first Bayern man and the home side attack. Really even game this is so far.

Min 21 | Robben wins another corner. Back post again?

Min 20 | Bayern trying to get themselves back in control of this one. Alonso gives it away after a decent spell of possession. Real Madrid giving them nothing though. Benzema fouls Javi Martinez.

Min 18 | Kroos with a lehtal ball in to the back post. Benzema heads it down into the ground and it bounces back up before hitting the crossbar. Neuer was outstretched and might have thought it was going to sneak in. The German was nearly beaten there. What a chance.

Min 17 | Benzema takes it down with a header in the box and pulls it back to Kroos. His shot is blocked and put out for a corner. Real Madrid looking dangerous now.

Min 16 | Ronaldo lines it up. He drives it over the bar though and it not happy with himself.

Min 15 | Bayern have the ball in the penalty area but Mueller is squeezed out. Real Madrid break and Ronaldo finds Benzema, who is fouled Boateng on the edge of the square.

Min 13 | Carvajal down on the ground now after suffering a a bodycheck from Artur Vidal. He should be able to carry on but he might be winded.

Min 12 | Bale gives it away as Thiago steals in to win it back after a poor pass by the Welsheman. both sides taking turns with spells of possession. Robben offside from a long ball over the top.

Min 11 | Marcelo falls over now but the referee says no free and Bayern attack. Plenty of action so far but no chances. Loads of intensity too, which we expected.

Min 9 | Tackles arriving heavy and early here. Bale ends up on the ground twice, before Lahm throws himself at the ball. He recoveres and gets it out wide to Robben as the Dutch winger is fouled by Kroos, his former teammate.

Min 7 | Really smart flick by Bale to Modric, who then passes to Ronaldo, but his shot is blocked. Marcelo gets a cross in but Bayern get rid of it for a throw to the visitors.

Min 6 | Real Madrid with their first spell in possession. Bayern putting them under pressure but the Spanish side do well to keep it. Ronaldo fouled by Thiago.

Min 4 | Alonso spreads it wide to Alaba with a wonderful pass. Another corner to Bayern Munich. This side from the right-hand side.

Min 3 | Another corner for Bayern as Lahm kicks it off Ramos. Ball sent to the back post again this time but this time Vidal can't header it towards the goals. An early tactic emerging for Ancelotti's side from corners.

Min 1 | An early corner for Bayern. Robben flicks it into Thiago and Real Madrid put it out behind their own end-line. Vidal headers it towards Navas and he collects.

Min 1 | We are underway at the Allianz Arena!

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid live stream online: latest news

20:33 | Can Madrid continue on their incredible scoring run? Los Blancos have played for almost a full calendar year without failing to score and are after a record set by their opposition tonight.

20:22 | Madrid come into this quarter final unbeaten in the Champions League this season - Juventus can also claim this.

20:18 | Xabi Alonso has had a pretty successful career winning plenty with both tonight's teams (and a cheeky trophy with Liverpool in 2005). How will he fare tonight against his old club?

20:15 | This is the 23rd time that these two sides will have met in European competition and many neutrals will be hoping for something like the 2011/12 semi-final, for nerve-rattling excitement anyway. Bayern won the first leg 2-1 but a Cristiano double back at the Bernabéu had Los Blancos going through until Robben took it to pens. The Germans won the shootout.

19:50 | Sadly, but understandably, we've seen workers at the Allianz Arena removing plastic banners after a Bayern fans' choreography was cancelled for security reasons.

19:46 | Half-time in Dortmund and Monaco have a healthy 2-0 lead.

19:28 | No major surprises then from either coach. Müller starts in place of the injured Lewandowsi and Nacho fills the void left by Pepe and Varane. The 27-year old from Madrid will be eager to impress on the big stage and has shown himself to be very capable when called upon before.

19:20 | Team news: Nacho starts alongside Ramos, BBC lead the charge. No Lewandowski as reported earlier.

19:04 | Although the focus is on the game tonight, there is always time for some transfer rumour. Eden Hazard has been strongly linked with Madrid but reports suggest he'll stay in London. (Chelsea have a huge game at Old Trafford on Sunday and AS English will be bringing you live coverage). While another attacker targeted by Los Blancos, Mbappé, has just scored for Monaco.

18:52 | The Real Madrid team have arrived at the Allianz Arena. Plenty of high-tech around the ears.

18:30 | Just 15 minutes until the rearranged game between Dortmund and Monaco kicks off. And you can also follow everything that happens at the Signal Iduna Park with AS English. We aim to please.

18:02 | "Winning the Champions League would be a dream come true, as it's the most difficult competition. I hope we can make the dream a reality this year." - Arturo Vidal targeting Cardiff glory.

17:50 | Barring a huge surprise, Zidane will start with the BBC frontline tonight, a combination that was initially put together by opposite number Ancelotti in the 2013/14 season.

17:41 | Tonight's opposing managers know each other well. Not only was Zidane assistant to Ancelotti at Real Madrid - before taking over in the dugout - but the Frenchman also performed on the pitch under the guidance of the Italian at Juventus.

17:16 | There's no place like home. There's no place like home. No, we've not just flicked over to the Wizard of Oz. We're just checking out that Bayern have won their last 16 games in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena....scoring a bucketload in the process.

16:52 | Álvaro Morata has been speaking to The Guardian's Spanish correspondent, Sid Lowe, ahead of the game. "Footballers are more like singers or rock stars than sportsmen," he says amongst other things in a very enjoyable read.

16:20 | Reports are filtering through that Robert Lewandowski WILL NOT PLAY this evening's match. The striker is still suffering pains to his shoulder and watch from the stands. More details on that here.

16:10 | Robert Lewandowski faces a late fitness test and if he does play tonight, it will be with the aid of a pain-killing injection. He has scored 38 goals in 40 games this season for Ancelotti's team, that's an average of one goal every 89 minutes.

15:41 | In his pre-match press conference, Zidane said that his attacking trio, Bale, Benzema and Cristiano, or the 'BBC' as they are affectionately known in Spain, "won't be frozen with fear" by the prospect of such a huge game: "They have a lot of experience and they're good players. The better you are at something, the more you get criticized and they know that. They have big personalities and they love big games like this".

15:14 | This is Madrid's 11th visit to Munich. Los Blancos have played 8 times in the old Olympiastadion and three times since Bayern upped sticks and moved to the Allianz Arena. Munich hasn't been a particularly fertile hunting ground for the Spanish side though - they have won just once, in 2014 and drawn once (in February 2004), losing the remaining nine matches.

15:00 | History could be made if Bayern go all the way and lift Ol' Big Ears in Cardiff - Carlo Ancelotti would becopme the first coach to win the trophy with three different clubs (He's already won it with AC Milan and Real Madrid); Xabi Alonso meanwhile, says he will be calling it a day when the season finishes but would love nothiong better than to crown his career by equalling a Champions League record of winning the competition with three different clubs. Just two players have done it - Clarence Seedorf (Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan) and Samuel Eto'o (Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan).

14:45 | When it comes to marriage proposals, Álvaro Morata's is certainly up there with the most original. He reveals how it felt to get down on one knee and pop the question and other issues, such as getting a phone call from Chelsea as he sat down to chew the fat with The Guardian's Sid Lowe.

14:25 | Real Madrid have scored in each of their last 52 official games -a Spanish record. They have only failed to get the old onion bag billowing in 5 of their last 73 games in European competition, most recently against Manchester City and Wolfsburg in last year's edition.

14:15 | Security has been tightened in Munich ahead of tonight's match. Bomb-sniffing dogs will conduct a search of Madrid's team bus before it sets off to the stadium tonight.

14:00 | Cristiano Ronaldo has scored eight goals in eight games in his trips to Germany with Madrid, including two against Bayern in April 2014. He only failed to find the net in two of those encounters - against Bayern in April 2012 and Wolfsburg last year.

13:25 | Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos will be trying to avoid going into Mr. Rizzoli's notebook this evening - if either are booked, they will miss next week's return leg at the Bernabéu.

13:15 |  AS statistician extraordinaire Mister Chip informs us, that no two other teams have met in European competition as many times as Real Madrid and Bayern. In total, these two heavyweights have locked horns no fewer than 22 times. Out of those meetings, Madrid have won 9, Bayern have won 11 and the remaining two games ended level.

12:40 | Directors and presidents from both clubs will sit down for the traditional pre-match lunch at the Käfer-Schänke restaurant, Uli Hoeness playing host for this first leg tie.

12:00 | We also have a live feed building up to the rearranged first leg between Borussia Dortmund and Monaco, and bringing the latest developments on the explosions that hit the German side's team bus on Tuesday.

11:00 | Good morning! We'll be bringing you all the latest ahead of tonight's Champions League clash in Bavaria!

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: match preview

Real Madrid travel to Bayern Munich with both teams fresh off the back of domestic derbies.

Madrid drew 1-1 with city-rivals Atlético Madrid, after a late goal from Antoine Griezmann denied Zinedine Zidane's side three points. Bayern, meanwhile, swept aside fellow quarter finalists Borussia Dortmund, 4-1 in Der Klassiker.

Bayern Munich

Carlo Ancelotti has not enjoyed a relaxed build up to the match against his former club. The Italian left the Bernabéu in 2015, a year after he won the Champions League for Los Blancos.

Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, and Robert Lewandwski face a rush to be fit for the match at the Allianz Arena. Neuer is recovering from a foot operation, Muller has and issue with his ankle, and Lewandowski is nursing a shoulder problem. The Polish striker only managed to train for 15 minutes on Tuesday.

Mats Hummels will definitely miss out, as a result of an ankle injury sustained in training on Sunday. In his absence, Javi Martínez and Jerome Boateng are likely to form a partnership in the centre of defence.

Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane, who served as Ancelotti's assistant at Real Madrid before taking the reins himself, also has an injury conundrum.

Both Pepe and Varane are out of both ties. The former may have played his last game for the club; his contract expires in the summer, and although he is willing to wait until the last minute for an offer from Real Madrid, he may leave for pastures new. Nacho is expected to slot in alongside Sergio Ramos in the heart of defence. Dani Carvajal is doubtful with a knock.

Speaking to the press before the match, Zidane expects a tough match: "we'll come up against a Bayern side that'll start strongly, they always do and all the more so at home. They know how to dominate a game and they always try to play with greater intensity than their opponents."
