The day that it seemed would never arrive, has come. Francesco Totti, 40, will retire from football at the end of the season, after 25 seasons at AS Roma.
Totti retirement confirmed by Monchi
Monchi, the Roma sporting director who recently arrived from Sevilla, confirmed the news that no Roma supporter wanted to hear. Yet he also stated that he would like Totti to remain at the club as a director.
"I already knew that he had this agreement with the club [to become a director] and that this was going to be his last year as a player before starting as a director," Monchi said.
"Francesco is Roma and I'm going to ask him to be close to me. Even if I can only learn one percent of what he knows, that is already a lot."
Roma's 'eternal captain'
Francesco Totti made his debut in 1993, and despite his immediate progression, nobody could have predicted that he would go on to become such a symbolic figure in the Italian capital.
Over the course of his 25 seasons at Roma, Totti amassed 782 appearances, 306 goals, and 123 assists. He was also part of the Italy squad that won the World Cup in Germany in 2006.
The years will pass, but his legend will remain. Thank you for everything, Don Francesco Totti.
