Armstrong posted a video on Instagram in which the headline "Road racing cyclist Lance Armstrong has died" can be seen on the mobile phone he is holding.
The camera then pans to the 45-year-old, who is frowning in amused disbelief and shaking his head.
The clip is accompanied by the caption "The rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated", a quote taken from 19th-century writer Mark Twain.
