In its Basque edition on Sunday morning, El Correo reported that Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde has agreed to take over from Luis Enrique at Barcelona next season.

The daily also stated that Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu has already informed the squad of the club’s decision to appoint the 53-year-old, who spent two seasons at Camp Nou as a player from 1988 to 1990.

El Correo said the deal was practically sealed and that it was now merely a case of hammering out the small print on what is expected to be a two-year deal.

Barça and Valverde have a bilateral clause permitting either party to pull out of the agreement before May 31, but it is not anticipated either will do so. The official announcement is likely to made after the Copa del Rey final on May 29, when Luis Enrique could add to the eight titles he has delivered in his three years in charge at Camp Nou.
