Real Madrid returned to Cibeles just 359 days after last seasons Champions League triumph in Milan to a packed square in central Madrid last night. Some 50,000 supporters according to early estimations spent the night celebrating the 33rd league title as the squad made their way directly from Malaga where a 0-2 was enough to wrap up Zinedine Zidane's first league win.
The open-top bus made it's way down the Castellana and arrived at Cibeles at 02:30. The squad made their way to the famous statue and that's when the festivities really began. The club hymn was belted out and it wasn't long before a chant directed at that Barça player Madrid fans love to hate, Gerard Pique was seconded by certain squad members as fans chanted. "Piqué, cabron, saluda al campeón". (Pique you bastard, bow down before the champions). City rivals Atleti were also reminded of the Madrid league triumph after the recent polemic tifos during the recent Champions League semi-final games with the masses chanting: "Indios, decidme qué se siente". (Atleti fans tell me how it feels).
Cristiano appeals to fans for UCL support
The Portuguese striker was handed the microphone during the various speeches and appealed for the fans support on June 3 when Madrid travel to Cardiff to face Juventus in the Champions League final. Shortly after 03:00 came the eagerly awaited moment when Sergio Ramos and Marcelo placed a club scarf around the neck of the Cibeles statue.
Celebrations continue
The squad will present their trophy to the fans once again this afternoon at Madrid city hall where mayoress of the city Manuel Carmena and of the province Cristina Cifuentes will be in attendance. At present no event at the Santiago Bernabeú is planned with the club anxious not to distract attention from the imminent Cardiff final.
