After drawing 0-0 with Toluca in Mexico, Atlético Madrid travel to Munich to take part in the Audi Cup on the 1st and 2nd of August. It is a young, yet prestigious competition, and El Cholo’s team will start with a match against Napoli, before taking on Liverpool or Bayern.

What is the Audi Cup?

The Audi Cup is one of the most prestigious pre-season tournaments in Europe. It is relatively young, having been founded in 2009 to commemorate Audi’s centenary year. The fifth Audi Cup gets underway on Tuesday, with the competition taking place every two years. Matches are played in the Allianz Arena, Munich.

Who takes part?

Bayern, as the host of the tournament, are permanent participants. AC Milan have participated in every edition of the Audi Cup so far, but will not play this year. Until 2013, the other two spots were filled by another European team, and a team from South America (Boca Juniors, Internacional, and Sao Paolo), but since 2015 the four teams have come from Europe’s top four leagues.

In 2017, four Champions League clubs will take to the turf: Bayern, Atlético, Liverpool, and Napoli.

Who has won the most titles?

Bayern have won the Audi Cup three times (2009, 2013, and 2015). Barcelona won in 2011.

How many Spanish teams have participated?

Atlético are the third Spanish team to take part. Barcelona won the tournament in 2011, with Thiago excelling in midfield. Real Madrid played in 2015, beating Tottenham in the first match before losing to Bayern in the final.

What is the format?

The tournament is played in two days. The semi-finals take place on the first day, the final and third-place play-off take place on the second day. The matches are 90 minutes, and go straight to penalties if they end as a draw.
