Burnley-Hannover abandoned after crowd trouble

The Premier League club's pre-season match with Hannover was called off after trouble in the visiting fans' section at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Burnley's pre-season friendly against Hannover 96 was called off on police advice after crowd trouble broke out at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.

The incidents occured in the first half, in the section occupied by fans of the visiting Bundesliga outfit, with seats ripped up from the stands and thrown.

There were also reports that knives were brandished at stewards attempting to keep the supporters involved away from the home fans.

Burnley boss Dyche backs abandonment

With the situation threatening to get out of hand, the decision was made to abandon the match at half time.

"The police decided to call it off and we support that," said Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

"We understand that. It's important what the team do, but it's not as important as people coming to a football match.

"You want safety. You don't want people to get hurt."

Burnley kick off Premier League campaign next weekend

Burnley were leading 1-0 thanks to Ben Mee's goal in their final warm-up before their Premier League opener at champions Chelsea on 12 August.
