Legendary Ludogorets coach Dermendzhiev resigns
Ludogorets have parted ways with their most successful coach Georgi Dermendzhiev after a harrowing defeat in the Bulgarian Supercup.
Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad have parted ways with the most successful coach in their history Georgi Dermendzhiev following a bitter defeat in the Supercup final, the club announced on Thursday.
Supercup defeat prompts Dermendzhiev's departure
The 62-year-old handed in his resignation after Ludogorets' 5-4 penalties defeat to lowly Botev Plovdiv on Wednesday evening. The club said they have accepted the decision and that negotiations have already started to find a successor before their first Europa League Play-Off against Lithuanian outfit Suduva on 17 August.
Ludogorets, who currently sit second in the Bulgarian league table, failed to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League after a 3-1 defeat against Israel’s Hapoel Beer-Sheva earlier this month.
Dermendzhiev led the team to three Bulgarian league titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017. He also qualified the team for the group stages of the 2015 Champions League, where they drew with Liverpool and lost narrowly to Real Madrid before bowing out of the tournament at the group stage. Local media pointed to Bulgarian Dimitar Dimitrov-Hero, 58, as his most likely successor.
