Real Madrid will make an official appeal against the second yellow card awarded to Ronaldo in last night's Spanish Super Cup at Camp Nou after the player was handed his marching orders by match official De Burgos Bengoetxea.

First yellow

The striker from Madeira was initially carded in the 80th minute for removing his shirt and gesturing to the home fans after scoring for Madrid with a gesture akin to that of Lionel Messi at the Santiago Bernabeu last season. Minutes later the Portuguese striker was carded again for a dive and then shoved match official De Burgos Bengoetxea, in a move that could cost the player anything between a four and twelve game suspension.

Real Madrid have confirmed they are set to appeal the second yellow of the night alleging that there was no intent from their player to deceive the referee and that the action was a result of a brush with Barcelona defender Umtiti.

Referee report

"In the 82nd minute, Cristiano Ronaldo was booked for simulating a foul", stated De Burgos Bengoetxea in his post match report adding; "Cristiano Ronaldo when shown the red card pushed me slightly in a gesture which showed his displeasure relating to my decision".

The player's action violates Rule 96 which states that: "grabbing, pushing or tripping or any other violent gestures towards a match official will be issued with a playing suspension ranging from four to twelve matches".

A verdict will be taken by the Comité de Competición who meet on Wednesday and Cristiano potentially stands to miss opening LaLiga Santander games against Deportivo la Coruña, Valencia, Levante and Real Sociedad.

The player may be eligible to participate in Wednesday's return leg of the Super Cup depending on how the appeal made by the Santiago Bernabeu outfit is viewed by the Disciplinary Committee.
