Madrid fans divided on defensive depth
53.4% of the 9,086 voters on an AS.com poll believe that Zinedine Zidane should sign a centre-half to join Ramos, Varane, Nacho, and Vallejo.
Real Madrid supporters want Zinedine Zidane to delve in to the transfer market for another centre-half, but only by a narrow majority.
Madrid fans want Zidane to sign defender
53.4 percent of the 9,086 voters on an AS.com poll answered ‘yes’ to the question: ‘would you sign another centre-half for Madrid before the transfer window closes?’
Madridistas want the club to add a fifth player in that position, to accompany the existing platter of Sergio Ramos, Raphäel Varane, Jesús Vallejo, and Nacho. Only the latter was available for the 2-2 draw with Valencia on Sunday, with the other three ruled out through a combination of injury and suspension. In their absence, Casemiro dropped back to play alongside Nacho. The Brazilian played well. His intelligent positioning allowed him make several key interceptions, yet he left a gap at the base of midfield.
Real Madrid placed faith in Vallejo
Earlier in the summer, the club looked in to the possibility of signing an experienced defender to play a similar role to that of Pepe last season. Ultimately, the decision was taken to place faith in 20-year-old Jesús Vallejo, who impressed during a loan spell at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Despite the result of the poll, the arrival of defensive cover appears highly unlikely. Zidane has already made his views public, stating before the Valencia match that “we don’t need reinforcement”.
