Ousmane Dembélé’s Liga debut with Barcelona ended swiftly as he was substituted early in the game against Getafe with an injury. On Saturday, after undergoing tests, it has been confirmed by the club that the France international faces three to four on the sidelines after he was diagnosed with a ruptured tendon in the biceps femoris of his left thigh.

Dembélé became the second most-expensive signing in history when he joined Barça from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of 105 million euros with a further 40 million in add-ons this summer and made his debut for the club in the Champions League victory over Juventus. Now, he will miss almost half of his first season at Camp Nou.

The 20-year-old will certainly not feature in the group stage of the Champions League again in 2017-18 with five fixtures remaining. Barça are up against Juve, Sporting Lisbon and Olympiacos in Group D and currently lead ahead of the Portuguese club on goal difference.

In LaLiga, Dembélé stands to miss the remainder of the first half of the competition, which ends on January 15 and will take no part in the first Clásico of the season at the Bernabéu on December 23. In all, he is expected to be unavailable against Eibar, Las Palmas, Málaga, Sevilla, Celta, Deportivo and Levante at Camp Nou and for Barcelona’s away fixtures at Girona, Atlético, Athletic, Leganés, Valencia, Villarreal and Real Sociedad in addition to the visit to the reigning champions.

In the Copa del Rey, Dembélé will be absent for the last 16 stage tie, which will take place on January 3 and 10, but stands an outside chance of making the quarter-finals, which are scheduled for January 17 and 24.
