Thomas Tuchel, favourite to take Bayern Munich job
Thomas Tuchel is reported to be holding talks with Bayern Munich and is the bookies’ favourite to succeed Carlo Ancelotti as coach.
Thomas Tuchel is reported to be holding talks with Bayern Munich and is looking like the favourite to take over as coach in the wake of Carlo Ancelotti's sacking last week.
According to German daily Bild, the 44-year-old Tuchel is in Munich and negotiating to take over at the Bavarian giants having been sacked by current Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund in May. Tuchel and Dortmund parted ways despite him steering the club to the German Cup last season, the coach having endured a strained relationship with club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.
PSG defeat cost Ancelotti his job
Bayern's Director of Sport Hasan Salihamidžić said on Friday that the club had “no names, nor profiles” of the coach who will replace Ancelotti, who was fired on Thursday just days after the team's humiliating 3-0 reverse to Paris Saint-Germain. “We will now collect our information and then make a decision”, Salihamidžić said.
Ancelotti spent 15 months in charge at Bayern and guided the team to the Bundesliga title last season. However, he was sacked after the team’s woeful performance at PSG when stars Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry and Mats Hummels were left on the bench.
Former Bayern defender Willy Sagnol has been appointed caretaker coach for Sunday's league match at Hertha Berlin. Should Bayern appoint Tuchel in the coming days, his first match will be against struggling Freiburg on 14 October, after the international break.
