Argentinean press conclude after Peru draw: "We're f*cked"

Argentina slipped up yet again last night against Peru in front of a packed house at La Bombonera and run the risk of missing out on a World Cup place for the first time since 1970.

The "Albiceleste" now face Ecuador in Quito on Wednesday and a win will as a minimum guarantee a play-off place against Oceania Confederation winners New Zealand but home confidence in Jorge Sampaoli is slipping away as each game goes by.

Press reaction

As expected the reaction from the local Argentina press has not been kind to the national side with a make or break game facing the team at the Olímpico Atahualpa with it's infamous altitude problem of 2.750 meters above sea level facing Sampaoli's men.

The most outspoken of the outlets was Diario Owho didn't mince their words with their. “We're fucked" tweet shortly after the conclusion of the action in Buenos Aires as the sports daily also concluded that the ball refused to go in. "More tedium without any goals and now a huge problem in qualifying for Russia" they added.

The TyC Sports television network claimed that Argentina are  “on the ropes” and revealed their anxiety with the situation: “As it stands Argentina are out of the 2018 World Cup”. They also focused on the stark, dark expression on Messi's face at the end of the game: “Lionel Messi was fuming with a blank expression at the end of the 0-0 draw with Peru”.

Clarín was the most upbeat of the major outlets being optimistic that Argentina would secure the win against Ecuador. “It's all or nothing against Ecuador. Although we need to win, a defeat (by a goal less than Perú and a Paraguay defeat) could also see us sneak a play-off place.
