Spain set for Portugal friendly at the Wanda Metropolitano
The Spanish FA are pursuing two other friendly options with games against Argentina or Russia in Saint Petersburg being the options.
The RFEF (Spanish FA) are set to confirm two pre-Russia 2018 friendly games for the November FIFA slots (6th to 9th and then 10th to 13th). A home tie against neighbours Portugal at the Wanda Metropolitano followed by an away trip to Saint Petersburg to face Russia are the likelihoods. Spain have only faced Russia once before in a friendly, when the national team was CCCP some 46 years ago (May 30, 1971) falling 2-1 in Moscow with Kolotov and Chevchenko scoring for the hoists with Rexach bagging a 85th minute consolation for Spain.
Argentina
If the Russian option fails to materialise then a match against Argentina is also being considered. The "Albiceleste" secured their ticket to the 2018 World Cup finals last night against Ecuador. Russia are also in parallel negotiation with the Argentine FA for a game on the same date.
The Spanish Federation are hoping that the Portugal game followed by the away trio to Saint Petersburg are ultimately the confirmed fixtures with national team coach Juelen Lopetegui anxious to experience time in the host nation prior to the tournament kicking off next June.
