Willem II's former Real Madrid player Fran Sol is to undergo an operation to remove a testicular tumour on Thursday, the Dutch club have revealed.

The tumour was detected during a medical check-up earlier this week.

Sol vows "hope, strength and confidence"

"We'll tackle this [...] with hope, strength and confidence," said Sol, who is a product of Real's youth system, in comments released by the Eredivisie outfit.

"My family and I ask for our privacy to be respected at this time," the Spaniard continued. "The support we're receiving from the club means a lot to us. We'd like to thank everyone for this."

"We are profoundly shocked by the news," said Willem II general manager Berry van Gool. "We'd like to express all our support for Fran and his family."

Sol joined Willem II last summer, scoring 10 times in 2016/17

Sol, who spent more than a decade in the Real academy, moved to Willem II in summer 2016 following the expiry of his contract with Villarreal B.

In his first season in the Netherlands, the 25-year-old forward scored 10 goals in 30 appearances, and had netted six in nine games so far this term.
