ALAVÉS

Enzo Zidane failing to convince De Biasi of his worth

The eldest son of Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane joined Alavés in the summer but has been omitted by the Italian due to a perceived lack of application.

Enzo Zidane failing to convince De Biasi of his worth

Enzo Zidane joined Alavés last summer, a side that has been enjoying a decent run in the league and the Copa del Rey on the basis of a young squad with a sprinkling of Real Madrid loan players.

The eldest son of Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, Enzo decided to leave Castilla and try his luck in Primera by working his way into the first team picture at the Mendizorrotza even if it was via taking advantage of rotations and Copa games.

However, since the arrival of Gianni Di Biasi as manager, Enzo has not even been in the match day squad for six consecutive Liga games.

At the start of the season, under Luis Zubeldía, the 22-year-old featured in matches against Barcelona and Celta but the departure of the Argentinean after a dreadful start to the season for the Basque outfit led to a change in Enzo’s fortunes.

With interim boss Javi Cabello at the helm, Enzo made the bench for the Liga match against Deportivo but with the arrival of Di Biasi he has disappeared from view. The only call-up to the squad he has received under the Italian was for the Copa del Rey match against Getafe, during which he played 68 minutes of a 1-0 away win.

Enzo signed a three-year contract when he joined the club but there is a feeling that although he possesses plenty of skill, he does not apply himself sufficiently to the more mundane aspects of the game.

With Alavés, who are 18th with six points, firmly involved in a relegation battle this season, the side’s technical staff are demanding more ground coverage and defensive work from the squad, even if that means sacrificing flair.
