When he was asked "For you, would it be a dream to play alongside Neymar and Mbappé?", Antoine Griezmann answered "Yes" and that reply hasn't exactly enamoured him with Atlético de Madrid fans. The player admitted that he didn't leave Atleti because "it wouldn't have been right" to leave the club in the lurch while the FIFA transfer ban was in place.

Griezmann wants to stay at Atlético, says Cerezo

Fans might be irked by club president Enrique Cerezo has taken Griezmann's word with a pinch of salt and came out to defend the player who he feels often gets misunderstood. "You don't understand Griezmann. You don't get what he is trying to say and you miss his sense of humour", Cerezo told journalists at an event held by Europa Press today.

The president went on to add that he believes Griezmann intends to complete his contract: "I haven't seen any evidence of him wanting to leave - only the opposite, that he wants to stay because, among other reasons, he's under contract".

Griezmann-United rumours persist

That won't stop the rumours about Griezmann's future with PSG as well as Manchester United having both been linked as his possible next destination - esopecially as from January, his buy-out will be halved from the 200 million euro figure set as a deterrant during the transfer ban. That means from next year he will be affordable for Manchester United - the club he has most been associated with.

Cerezo also spoke about Saturday's first Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano. "Nerves will start creeping in on Saturday during the hours before the game. But right now we need to be relaxed. What's the point in feeling nervous? We're level on points and whoever wins will have three points more than the other. The most important thing is that we see a good game of football. We always go out to win but the chances of winning be 50:50 on Saturday".
