Leo Messi signs contract extension at Barcelona
The Camp Nou board have confirmed the Argentina captain will remain at the club until 2021 with a minimum release clause of 700 million euros.
FC Barcelona have announced on social media that Leo Messi has signed a contract extension to keep him at Camp Nou until 2021, when he will be 34 years old. The announcement was accompanied by a photograph of the Argentina captain alongside club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and effectively brings to an end months of speculation over the player’s future.
Anti-PSG release clause
The agreement was signed on Saturday morning and includes an increase in Messi’s minimum release clause from 250 million euros to 700 million, a move on the part of the club to prevent a repetition of Neymar’s world record transfer to PSG last summer.
It is Messi’s eighth contract renewal at Barcelona in the last 12 years and comes after the club announced the Argentina captains’ renewal in June but without any official confirmation. A picture is worth a thousand words, the saying goes, and Barcelona fans can now rest easy in the knowledge that their star player and talisman will be wearing the claret and blue for another four years.

“I’m very happy, it’s been a while that only the signature has been missing and today that happened," Messi said after applying the ink to his new deal. "I’m happy to continue at the club, which is my home, and to carry on playing here. I want to be here for my whole career, I’ve always said that it’s my dream to retire at Barcelona and we’re on the path to that. The objective is to keep on winning things, adding to the trophy cabinet and every player here has a lot of possibilities to win more titles in the next few years and we want to keep on doing that.”
