Quique Sánchez Flores: Stoke deliver ultimatum to Espanyol coach

Stoke City have offered the 52-year-old coach a five-year contract and an enticing project. He is under contract in Barcelona until June, but could stay longer.

Stoke City want Quique Sánchez Flores to become their new coach after sacking Mark Hughes. The Premier League club are desperate for Quique to take over, to the extent that club officials travelled to Barcelona in an attempt to convince him.

Stoke to offer Quique a long-term project

Stoke are not offering Quique a fire-fighting job. The Potters occupy a position in the relegation zone, but a long-term project is on offer. They are offering Quique a five-year contract and a financially lucrative package.

But for good or bad, Quique must take a decision as soon as possible. Stoke want to secure his services imminently, or move on to alternative targets. Martin O’Neill, the Republic of Ireland coach, has also been linked to the vacant position.

Espanyol show signs of stagnation

The former Watford coach is in the second year of his contract at Espanyol. He has the option to extend his contract by a further year, but both club and manager can opt to sever the relationship in the summer. Espanyol have not kept all of the promises they initially made to Quique, and with the club in 14th position in LaLiga, it appears that the project has stagnated.

That said, the Spanish club do not believe that Quique will abandon the project in the middle of the season. The next 24 hours will be key. He will either go to Stoke and be presented within the next few days, or he will stay at Espanyol.
