Rumours surrounding the future of Argentina international Mauro Icardi continue to gather pace with Real Madrid forcing their way to the front of the queue for the Inter Milan striker.

On Tuesday, Italian daily Corriere dello Sport ran a front page story stating that the Bernabéu board are preparing to meet Icardi’s minimum release clause of 110 million euros, which they consider to be a bargain in the current transfer climate.

Inter are preparing to offer Icardi a new contract and to raise his clause to 200 million euros but in order to do so the club will first have to ensure qualification for European football next season.

Madrid are eager to poach Icardi during the current window to reinforce a spluttering front line hampered by the poor form of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale’s injury layoffs.

Icardi is eligible to play in the Champions League this season, which would suit all parties as the striker wants to ensure his place in the Argentina squad for the World Cup in Russia.

At 24, Icardi is one of the most valued strikers in Europe at the moment. In 20 Serie A games this season he has scored 18 goals.
