LEGANÉS 3-2 ESPANYOL

Espanyol's Hermoso makes history: two own goals and one at the other end

The Espanyol player will go in the record books after doing something never before achieved: scoring against his own side for 1-0 and 3-1 before making it 3-2.

Update:

Mario Hermoso will enter the Liga record books after his role in Leganés' 3-2 victory over Espanyol on Sunday after becoming the first player in history to score an improbable hat-trick at both ends of the pitch.

The Espanyol defender beat his own keeper twice in Butarque and then struck the final goal of the game at the other end to complete a sweep not seen since the creation of LaLiga in 1928.

Hermoso, who is playing his first season in the Spanish top flight after signing for Espanyol from Real Madrid Castilla last summer, scored the opener on 11 minutes when he turned a Zaldua shot, which was going wide, into his own net.

The 22-year-old almost made it 1-1 before half time but saw the ball nicked off his head by Unai Bustinza as he was shaping to place his effort. Hermoso did find the net at the right end of the pitch in the 88th minute when Leganés keeper Pichu punched the ball out straight into the defender's head. Hermoso didn't know much about his strike but the ball bobbed into the net to make it 3-2.

However, six minutes earlier he inadvertendly gifted Leganés a 3-1 lead when he diverted a Nordin Amrabat cross beyond Diego López to mark a historic afternoon that may take another 90 years to be repeated.
