The interest is based on the fact that current central players Nainngolan and Strootman are both expected to exit the Serie A side during the summer coupled with the age factor in the case of veteran De Rossi who is now 34. Monchi deems that Kovacic is the ideal key player to drive the central play at the Olimpico for Roma.
Wait
Real Madrid for their part are excepted not to make any sporting decisions until the current Champions League campaign has come to a conclusion with Zidane's men set to face PSG in the last 16. Rafa Benítez was instrumental in bringing the Croatian into the club in 2015 for a fee of 30 million euro and the player has become a key piece for Zidane despite just playing in 39% of possible playing time but has been used as a starter in the big games against the likes Athletic, Atlético, Barça, Sevilla…

Roma face stiff competition in any potential move for the midfielder with the likes of Inter and Tottenham also believed to be interested in the services of the 23-year-old.
