Pau López in line to take the reins from Adán at Betis
The 23-year-old keeper has not renewed his contract with Espanyol. Initially, he will provide competition for Adán, who could move on in 2019.
Pau López looks in line to move to Betis next season. As we reported here a while ago, the Espanyol keeper is the name at the top of list of reinforcements drawn up by the Andalucian club for the 2018/19 campaign - vice-president of Sport Lorenzo Serra Ferrer has been working for some time to reach a verbal agreement with Pau, who he sees as the team's keeper for the future but to all intents and purposes is still a Perico. However it seems Betis are close to getting their man.
Less than five months left on Pau's contract
Pau will be out of contract at the end of June and unless there is a drastic change of circumstances, he won't renew terms with Espanyol. Out of all of the offers he has received, only Betis' appeals to him. He will see a significant rise in his pay packet and play in front of a 40,000 capacity crowd every home game. He only turned 23 just before Christmas but has ample experience in the top flight; the player also believes he can develop his game further with the verdiblancos.
If the deal goes through as planned, Pau will find himself in competition with Antonio Adán for a regular place in the side. Adán's contract expires in June 2019 and neither the player, nor the club have expressed an interest in prolonging their professional relationship - nor is it unfeasible that he could leave the club this summer. If that happens, Serra Ferrer would have to find another goalkeeper as well as Pau, as veteran Dani Giménez will be leaving Betis in July.
