De Gea: Ferdinand reveals Manchester United squad had doubts
Rio Ferdinand discussed the Spain international 'keeper following his superb display in the Champions League against Sevilla.
Rio Ferdinand does not doubt that David de Gea has developed in to one of the best goalkeepers in the world. The Manchester United stopper demonstrated that once again on Wednesday evening with an inspired performance against Sevilla in the Champions League. His physics-defying save against Luis Muriel drew particular acclaim.
Ferdinand reveals de Gea doubts in United dressing room
Yet Ferdinand - who played with de Gea when the Spaniard arrived in Manchester - has revealed that he did not always inspire such confidence.
"‘We were talking before, when he first came, even as players we were sitting there with doubts," Ferdinand said on BT Sport.
"A young kid just coming to Manchester United, and we needed to win every year. How were we going to do that with a young kid, who was inexperienced and looked like he was lacking confidence?"
De Gea has worked hard to get where he is
De Gea was just 20-years-old when he signed for Manchester United in 2011. He faced the unenviable task of replacing Edwin Van der Sar, the vastly-experienced Dutch 'keeper.
Yet Ferdinand is impressed with his development in the subsequent seven years. "You look where he is today and that’s a sign of someone who has worked hard to get where he needs to get."
