Atlético lead powerful cast into Europa League quarters

Atletico Madrid underlined their favourites' tag as they marched past Lokomotiv Moscow into the Europa League quarter-finals where they were joined by Olympique Marseilles and Lazio on Thursday.

Lokomotiv Moscow 1-5 Atlético Madrid (1-8 agg.)

Fernando Torres struck twice for the La Liga side in a 5-1 victory in icy Moscow to seal an 8-1 aggregate victory over Lokomotiv. Angel Correa had given the Spanish side the lead on the night and although Lokomotiv levelled, Saul Niguez restored their advantage before Torres's double, the first from the penalty spot, took the game away from the Russians. Substitute Antoine Griezmann completed the scoring.

Athletic Bilbao 1-2 Olympique Marseilles (2-5 agg.)

Dimitri Payet's penalty put Marseilles on track for a 2-1 victory at Athletic Bilbao - their first win away to Spanish opposition - to claim a 5-2 aggregate triumph. It was revenge for Marseilles who were beaten by Bilbao in the round of 32 two years ago.

Dynamo Kiev 0-2 Lazio (2-4 agg.)

Lazio looked vulnerable going into the second leg against Dynamo Kiev after being held 2-2 at home but former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva gave them an early lead with only his third goal in seven seasons. Kiev would have progressed with a 1-1 draw but they offered little and their hopes were killed off when Stefan de Vrij calmed Lazio's nerves with a late second goal for the Rome club.

Zenit St Petersburg 1-1 RB Leipzig ( 2-3 agg.)

Bundesliga side RB Leipzig also reached the last eight with a 1-1 draw at 2008 UEFA Cup winners Zenit St Petersburg to claim a 3-2 aggregate win. Frenchman Jean-Kevin Augustin gave Leipzig the lead midway through the first half with a crisp shot but Sebastian Driussi levelled on the night for Zenit. Leipzig could even afford the luxury of Timo Werner's missed penalty.

Viktoria Plzen 2-1 Sporting CP (2-3 agg.)

Portugal's Sporting needed an extra-time header from Rodrigo Battaglia to seal a 3-2 aggregate win over Slovakia's Viktoria Plzen after the hosts had forced the additional period with goals by Marek Bakos. Battaglia's effort spared the blushes of Bas Dost who missed a penalty for Sporting at the end of normal time.

Lyon 2-3 CSKA Moscow (3-3 agg. Moscow win on away goals)

Olympique Lyonnais's hopes of reaching the final to be staged in their home stadium were ended by CSKA Moscow.

Lyon won the first leg 1-0 away but a 3-2 defeat in the return sent them out on away goals -- Aleksandr Golovin, Ahmed Musa and Pontus Wernbloom were all on target for the Russians.

Mariano Diaz's goal for Lyon in the 71st minute made it 3-3 on aggregate but the hosts needed another and substitute Myziane Maolida could not oblige, fluffing a stoppage-time chance.

Arsenal 3-1 AC Milan (5-1 agg,)

Arsenal completed a 5-1 aggregate victory over seven-times European champions AC Milan, winning 3-1 on the night in north London after the Italians had scored first.

Hakan Calhanoglu's stunning strike put Milan ahead but the lead lasted only four minutes as Danny Welbeck was awarded a highly-dubious penalty, falling to the ground despite apparently no contact from Milan defender Ricardo Rodriguez.

Welbeck converted the 39th minute penalty and added a late header after Granit Xhaka's goal had put the tie beyond Milan.

Victory meant Arsenal snapped a seven-year run of last-16 exits in Europe -- all in the Champions League.

Dortmund 0-0 RB Salzburg (1-2 agg.) 

Borussia Dortmund bowed out of the tournament, though, with a tame goalless draw in Austria sealing their fate.

After falling to a shock 2-1 loss in the first leg at home, the German giants failed to break down their stubborn opponents, who will play in the last eight of a continental competition for the first time since losing the 1994 UEFA Cup final to Inter Milan.
