Borja Mayoral chuffed after beating Raúl's under-21 record
The Real Madrid forward has scored nine for La Rojita, overtaking his Bernabéu idol, and now has Gerard Deulofeu's mark in his sights.
Borja Mayoral beat Raúl González’s mark for Spain’s under-21s with a brace against Estonia on Tuesday in a qualification game for the European Championship, which takes place in Italy and San Marino next summer.
After overtaking the former Real Madrid number seven, Mayoral wrote on his personal website: “Raúl is one of the players who has always been a reference point for me. I grew up watching him play as captain of Real Madrid and achieving great things. To be able to overtake him for the under-21s is a huge honour.”
Mayoral bags six in his last three for Spain under-21s
Mayoral has scored six in his last three games for Spain’s under-21s, including a hat-trick against Northern Ireland during the current international break, and now has Gerard Deulofeu’s record of 17 goals for La Rojita in his sights. “It’s a beautiful challenge to be in the position to try and become the highest goal-scorer of all-time for the under-21s and I’ll work hard to achieve it. I like to set myself big challenges and go for them although the most important thing is the team and trying to win the European Championship. We are dreaming of being champions.”
