After overtaking the former Real Madrid number seven, Mayoral wrote on his personal website: “Raúl is one of the players who has always been a reference point for me. Mayoral has scored six in his last three games for Spain’s under-21s, including a hat-trick against Northern Ireland during the current international break, and now has Gerard Deulofeu’s record of 17 goals for La Rojita in his sights. “It’s a beautiful challenge to be in the position to try and become the highest goal-scorer of all-time for the under-21s and I’ll work hard to achieve it. I like to set myself big challenges and go for them although the most important thing is the team and trying to win the European Championship. We are dreaming of being champions.”
