Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone lent his reserve side, coached by Óscar Fernández, a helping hand by beating Deportivo at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday evening.

Atlético B are currently in the mix for a place for the Segunda B playoff places and locked in a tussle with Deportivo Fabril, the Riazor reserve side, for one of the spots on offer. Atlético B are in sixth place on 49 points after beating Coruxo 3-0 on Friday with Fabril, who play Segoviana away later on Sunday, in third on 56.

Due to Liga regulations, a senrio side and their reserve team cannot play in the same division and so if Clarence Seedorf’s side, who are x points from safety, are relegated this season, Fabril’s results in Segunda B Group I will rendered irrelevant as they will be prevented from contesting the end of season playoffs for promotion to Segunda.

That could play into the hands of Atlético B, who are five points shy of Navalcarnero in fourth with six rounds of fixtures to go.

Fernández’s side have been in excellent form of late and Simeone has not hesitated to call up five Atlético B players to complete the squad for Sunday’s match against Deportivo. Full-back Carlos Isaac is expected to start in the Metropolitano for his senior debut in the absence of Filipe Luis, Juanfran and Sime Vrsaljko while Antonio Montoro, Keidi Bare, Toni Moyá and Juan Agüero have all been handed senior call-ups.
