Las Palmas fans plan "rubbish" protest as Segunda beckons
Under the slogan "Primera goes in the bin," home supporters at the Estadio de Gran Canaria will dress in black and cover empty seats with rubbish bags on Sunday.
Las Palmas supporters are preparing a protest against the club’s board during Sunday’s game against Alavés at the Estadio de Gran Canaria as the side’s slide into Segunda División edges closer.
The Canary Islanders have spent just six weeks outside the bottom three this season and have been mired in the relegation places since match day eight, winning just five games and whittling through three managers before appointing Paco Jémez in December.
Las Palmas’ fortunes have scarcely improved under the former Rayo coach, who has accrued just 10 points from his 16 games in charge.
Las Palmas out and practically down
With a 13-point gap to Levante and five games remaining, the chances of Las Palmas avoiding the drop are extremely remote and paying punters in Gran Canaria are intending to make their point on Sunday by dressing in funereal black and bringing bin bags to cover the empty seats that have become a feature of the season as plenty of fans have voted with their feet.
A minute’s silence will be held in the 30th minute to lament the side’s woeful season and the club anthem will be sung in the 49th to commemorate the year of Las Palmas’ foundation.
