Deportivo relegated from LaLiga for third time in seven years

Deportivo La Coruña also dropped out of the top division in 2011 and 2013, and won promotion at the first time of asking on both occasions.

El Depor confirmó su tercer descenso en siete años

Deportivo La Coruña confirmed their relegation from LaLiga with a 2-4 defeat to Barcelona – who themselves were crowned champions – at Riazor on Sunday evening.

Clarence Seedorf’s side needed to win to maintain hope of survival, and despite goals from Lucas Pérez and Emre Çolak fueling hope of a comeback, Depor will join Málaga and Las Palmas in the Segunda División next season.

The Branquiazuis have already tasted relegation twice in the last seven years – in 2011 and 2013 – and their presence in LaLiga has remained precarious. In 2015 Depor secured safety with a 2-2 draw at Barcelona on the final day of the season, and in 2016 with a 0-1 win at Villarreal on the penultimate day of the season. In 2017 safety was also confirmed on the penultimate day at Villarreal, but a 0-0 draw was enough on that occasion.

Deportivo dropped down to the second tier after 20 consecutive seasons in LaLiga, the longest run in the club’s history. Augusto César Lendoiro was the president and Miguel Ángel Lotina occupied the dugout.

Depor had their fate in their own hands going in to the final day of the season and a match against Valencia in La Coruña. But nerves got the better of them. A 0-2 defeat sent Depor down with 43 points, a record amount for a relegated team.

Like the previous relegation, Depor dropped on the last day of the season, at Riazor. Real Sociedad were the opponents, and the Basque side were in a race for Champions League qualification. A 0-1 defeat confirmed relegation in a season that saw three coaches lead Depor: José Luis Oltra, Domingos Paciencia and Fernando Vázquez.
