REAL MADRID

Real Madrid's Liga form has emptied the Bernabéu

The game against Celta could mark a season-low for attendance, which currently stands at the 55,106 spectators who turned out for the Getafe fixture.

Real Madrid’s final home game of the season could mark a season-low attendance at the Bernabéu, which has been gradually emptying throughout 2017-18 as the form Zinedine Zidane’s side has plummeted.

The visit of Celta has failed to ignite much interest among Real fans, with 4,100 tickets still available on Saturday morning for the game. There may be many absences among season-ticket holders as well, in part due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury and a bank holiday in Madrid on Tuesday leading many to take advantage of a long weekend.

The Bernabéu’s capacity is 81,044 but only the Clásico against Barcelona last December has seen more than 80,000 people through the turnstiles. On four occasions this season, fewer than 60,000 have turned out to watch Madrid, for games against Leganés, Athletic, Girona and Getafe. The fixture against Real’s near neighbours pulled in just 55,106 spectators, the lowest of the season to date.

Attendance has been dropping steadily as Real’s title defence has wilted, with those games against Leganés, Athletic, Girona and Getafe corresponding to four of the last five Liga fixtures at the Bernabéu. Only the derby against Atlético bucked the trend, with 78,769 people attending the game.

At the beginning of the season, when expectations were higher, 71,205 fans watched the match against Espanyol while games against Eibar, Las Palmas and Levante all pulled in more than 65,000 fans. More than 75,000 attended the Málaga fixture in week 13.

On Saturday evening, the record low attendance for the season could be beaten when Real host Celta, which is not exactly the culmination to 2017-18 envisaged by the board and the money men at the Bernabéu last August.
