Fernando Torres says farewell: "It's tough to know it's the end"
The Atlético Madrid striker played out his last game for his boyhood club and at the end took to the field in front of his adoring fans at the Wanda Metropolitano.
After the conclusion of his final game for Atlético Madrid, Fernando Torres addressed the Atleti faithful with the following words:
"I would like to thank a lot of people. Many of you have helped with this. To start with, those in the third tier, especially Luis Aragonés. I would like to mention my grandfather. Also, to my family, my parents, with whose effort has allowed their children to fulfill their dreams. To my father for teaching me his values. Thank you Dad. To my brother, Israel, my sister... my wife, who is a pillar in my life, who keeps me calm and has always been there".
Torres gives fans an emotional speech
The Spanish legend at the club signed off in fine style scoring both Atleti goals in a 2-2 draw to end the season five points clear of local rivals Real Madrid in second place of LaLiga. He went on to say:
"Also to those who advised me, they have been there since I was 17. They know who they are. To my teammates, the coaching staff, these have been three and a half magnificent years and I am very proud to have been part of this group. I'm certain that you're going to get what we all want. I thank the whole Atlético family. I knew I wanted to play here and I've had the privilege of wearing this shirt in over 400 games. It's very tough to know it's the end.
"'Why are we Atleti?' they ask us many times. It is difficult to explain. Remember the feelings of pride and happiness of belonging to a big family through the bad times when they want to break us up. It has been a proud honour and a privilege to wear this shirt and play with this group of footballers. You have made me the happiest person in the world.
The most beautiful song
"I'm going to ask you for one last thing, to sing our anthem, which is the most beautiful song in the world."
After these words, Fernando Torres went around the field with his teammates and relatives, listening to the anthem of the club being sung by all the rojiblanca fans.
