Roig confirms Rodri exit and takes a swipe at Atlético
"They are a club that talk a lot but don't back that up with their actions," says Villarreal president with midfielder set for Metropolitano switch.
Villarreal president Fernando Roig has confirmed that midfielder Rodri will be leaving the Cerámica this summer and had a few choice words for Atlético Madrid, who are expected to sign the Spain international after monitoring his progress for some time.
“He is leaving too soon,” said Roig. “The player has already announced that he is leaving, with a sense of regret and sorrow that he is doing so, and I would have liked him stay with us for many more years but it wasn’t to be.”
Atlético expected to sign Rodri this summer
Pending official confirmation, Atlético are Rodri’s chosen destination, with Diego Simeone seeking to rejuvenate his midfield ahead of the 2018-19 season. And the manner of the 21-year-old’s departure has irked Roig, who alluded to the Europa League champions’ meddling in contract negotiations with the player, whose current deal runs until 2022.
“We have come to the best arrangement possible for all three parties, with a club that talk a lot but don't back that up with their actions. But that’s the way life is and that’s the way football is, so we’ll accept the situation sportingly and that’s that,” Roig said.
