Atlético to ask CAS to allow Simeone on the bench for the Super Cup

Diego Simeone is half way through a four-match ban incurred during the first leg of Atlético Madrid's Europa League semi-final against Arsenal.

The sun has only just set on the 2017-18 season, yet Atlético Madrid are already looking ahead to the next one. The UEFA Super Cup - against Real Madrid or Liverpool - will be Atleti's first match of the 2018-19 campaign, and the club are desperate to have Diego Simeone on the touchline for it.

Cholo still has two matches to serve

Los Rojiblancos will ask the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to waive Simeone's touchline ban and allow him to stand beside the pitch for the Super Cup in Tallinn in August.

'El Cholo' incurred a four-match ban following a tirade at the referee in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final against Arsenal. He served the first game of the ban in the return leg, and the second game in final in Lyon. Meanwhile, his assistant Germán Burgos occupied the technical area alone. He still had two matches to serve: the Super Cup and the first match in the Champions League group stage.

Second time lucky with CAS

Prior to the Europa League final, Atlético failed to convince the CAS that Simeone should be able to watch the match from the dugout.

The coach could only speak directly to his players after the final whistle and Atlético want to avoid a repetition of that situation in Estonia.
