Guillermo Varela, the defender representing Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, has spoken out about suggestions he may be on his way to LaLiga champions FC Barcelona, saying it would be a dream.

Varela dreams on Barça move

Reports in the media had stated that compatriot Luis Suárez had called for his club in Spain to sign the defender and Varela said that he had seen the news but that his main focus right now was on representing his country.

""I've read it but I did not even ask Luis. Nobody has confirmed it to me. Obviously it would be a dream to play for Barcelona and, even more so, with Suárez. That would be really nice, but I don't want to think about it.," the 25-year old responded to EFE news outlet.

Misfiring Suárez not a worry

The defender was also asked about his thoughts on the criticism Suárez received after their country's opening World Cup game against Egypt, a match in which the striker fluffed his lines on various occasions but where three points were picked up thanks to a late header from Gimenez. Even the social media influencer mocked the former Liverpool star by comparing him to Egypt's Mohamed Salah, who didn't play in the game.

"He's really up for this and full of enthusiasm. He couldn't put the chances away the other day, but Luis is doing fine. He's a great player, and has always shown that at Barça."

On the structure of the game itself, Varela made it clear that manager Óscar Tabárez had set the team up to defend first and attack second, as and when the opportunities arise.

And on his debut in a World Cup, the Peñarol player added that one of his dreams had now been fulfilled.

Man Utd and Real Madrid spells

Guillermo Varela started his professional career in Montevideo for Peñarol in 2010 before moving to Manchester United in 2013. The Premier League giants sent him out on loan to Real Madrid Castilla and then Eintracht Frankfurt before the defender returned to his home club.
