Donald Trump gave his support to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after he insisted his players must stand for the national anthem.

New NFL policy states that any player on the field must now stand for the anthem after kneeling protests throughout 2017 that drew criticism from United States president Trump, although the implementation of those guidelines is under review.

While some owners have stated they will continue to support their players if they choose to protest, Jones has taken the opposite stance.

"Our policy is you stand during the anthem, toe on the line," he said earlier this week.

And although he later added that Trump's involvement is "problematic", he has the backing of the president.

"Way to go Jerry. This is what the league should do!" Trump posted on Twitter alongside a link to Jones' comments.

Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown earlier implied that NFL owners had been asked not to discuss the national anthem policy.
