AC Milan, Real Madrid’s rivals in the Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu
Madrid have confirmed that the Italian side will be their guests in the XXXIX edition of the summer tournament on 11 August at 21.00 hours CEST.
Real Madrid will play the XXXIX edition of the Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu against AC Milan on 11 August at 21.00 hours CEST, the club confirmed on its official webpage this evening.
Commemorating the 58 final in Brussels
The game will commemorate the third European Cup final between Real Madrid and Milan in 1958 – continuing a tradition which Madrid started in 2016 to remember the first trophies the club won in Europe. Stade de Reims were guests in 2016 and Fiorentina the following summer.
The 1958 final against Milan took place at Heysel stadium in Brussels and Real Madrid won the game 3-2 with Paco Gento grabbing the winner in extra-time; Alfredo Di Stéfano and Héctor Rial were Madrid’s other scorers on the night with Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Ernesto Grillo finding the net for the Italians.
Sacchi's Milan were two-time winners
It won’t be the first time Milan have taken part in the pre-season tournament – they were runners-up in 1999 but won the trophy twice – Arrigo Sacchi’s team lifting it in 1988 and 1990.
Between them, Real Madrid and Milan have a combined total of 20 European Cups. They are the two clubs to have won the competition the most times - Madrid have lifted the trophy 13 times and Milan, seven.
