Van der Vaart joins promoted Danish side Esbjerg
The former Midtjylland midfilder, who left the champions last season without a medal, has joined the newly promoted Superliga club on a one-year deal.
Rafael van der Vaart is to continue his late career foray in the Danish Superliga after signing a one-year deal at newly promoted side Esbjerg.
The 35-year-old midfielder spent the last two seasons at FC Midtjylland but failed to make an impact, spending most of 2017-18 with the reserves and managing just six minutes for the senior side, who went on to be crowned champions.
Van der Vaart to wear the number 10 at Esbjerg
Danish media reported the agreement on Saturday with Van der Vaart to wear the number 10 shirt for Esbjerg, who currently sit second bottom of the Superliga after three games of the 2018-19 season. Bold.dk stated that talks between the player and club have been ongoing for some time, after Van der Vaart left Midtjylland under a cloud last May, complaining that he anticipated the champions “would build a team around me,” subsequently missing out on a winner’s medal.
Van der Vaart’s decision to join Esbjerg was also influenced by his partner, Estavana Polman, who has represented the local handball side, Team Esbjerg, since 2013.
