Real Madrid full back Theo Hernández has signed a one-year loan deal at Real Sociedad for the 2018-19 season.

Hernández, who joined Real Madrid last year from Atlético via a season on loan at Alavés, is expected to sign a contract on Friday and could then head to La Real’s training base in Germany, if the club’s medical staff give him the all-clear to travel.

Hernández’s flight to San Sebastián on Thursday was cancelled, forcing the player to make the drive north. Early on Friday, in the company of Sociedad’s sporting director Roberto Olabe, the left back was submitted for his examination.

Later in the day, the transfer was made official on La Real's website: "Real Sociedad have reached agreement with Real Madrid CF for the season-long loan of Theo Hernández. The club has also agreed terms with the player. The defender passed the relevant medical check-up on Friday morning at the Policlínica Gipuzkoa. He will be presented in the coming days."

Hernández seeking his Alavés spark with Sociedad loan

Hernández becomes La Real’s second signing of the summer after the arrival of Mikel Merino from Newcastle for a fee in the region of 12 million euros. Sociedad are expected to make a move for a left winger and another player after coach Asier Garitano said last week that the club needed two more signings to be competitive this season.

Hernández served as understudy to Marcelo at the Bernabéu in a campaign that did not live up to expectations after his breakthrough season at Alavés. In total he made 23 appearances for Madrid last season and provided three assists.

Real Sociedad have two remaining friendly games before LaLiga kicks off next weekend, against Stuttgart on Saturday 11 and Freiburg on Sunday 12.
