The Ronaldo Effect: Juventus sees staggering growth across its social media

The signing of Cristiano Ronaldo has had a tremendous impact Juventus’ social media channels, which have witnessed spectacular growth over the past two months. In July, the Italian club led the footballing world in number of audience interactions on Facebook and Instagram, and in number of video plays on YouTube.

According to data compiled by Result Sports, Juventus gained 3.5 million more Instagram followers in July, well above its average monthly growth of half a million followers. With a total of 14.4 million followers, Juventus has surpassed PSG to become the fourth most followed football club on Instagram. It is worth noting that only 14 clubs in the world have more than 4 million followers on Instagram, which is a little more than what Juventus gained in the space of a few weeks thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Across all platforms

Across all social media platforms, Juventus gained 6.2 million followers in July, which is incredible growth considering that club rarely passes the one million mark in monthly new followers.

Data published by Deportes&Fianzas shows that Juventus was not only the leader in Instagram interactions amongst football clubs, but the entire sporting world. Across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram it had a total of 83.3 million interactions, number one in football ahead of Real Madrid, which had 80 million interactions. To put that in perspective relative to other Italian clubs: the second Serie A club to appear on the list is Inter, which is placed 14th with a mere 9.38 million interactions.

YouTube plays in July double January-June

Juventus has also led the entire sporting world on YouTube with 36.3 million video plays in July, 4.4 million more than second-placed FC Barcelona, and 11.9 million more than Real Madrid in third place. But perhaps the most staggering figure of all is that in July alone, Juventus had almost double the amount of YouTube video plays it had in the first six months of the year between January and June (18.3 million).
