Thomas apologises to fan for breaking his glasses
The Atlético Madrid midfielder took to Twitter to directly apologise to the supporter over the incident, which happened moments after Atlético-Valencia game on Monday night.
Atlético Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey took to Twitter to apologise to a Valencia fan for breaking his glasses at the end of the Valencia-Atlético game at the Mestalla stadium on Monday night, which finished 1-1.
The Ghanaian international launched a wayward ball into the stands after referee Gil Manzano blew the final whistle, which hit an unsuspecting local supporter on the face, breaking his glasses and leaving him with scratches on his eyelid.
After hearing about the incident, Thomas sent a direct message to the supporter on Twitter to apologise.
“Good morning Jose! I just found out that I hit you with the ball last night at the Mestalla. I hope you are ok. I’m very sorry about your glasses, it was unintentional,” the Atlético star tweeted.
A night of sportsmanship
Shortly before the incident, Thomas received a standing ovation from the home supporters at the Mestalla for his sportsmanlike behaviour. The midfielder halted an Atlético counter-attack by kicking the ball out of play, in order to allow Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo, who was on the ground due to a muscle injury, to receive treatment.
In another fine example of sportsmanship which characterized the evening at the Mestalla on Monday night: the Valencia team formed a guard of honour for the Atlético players before the game, to congratulate them on their Uefa Super Cup final victory against Real Madrid last Wednesday.
