Asensio, Vinicius...? Real Madrid's No. 7 shirt looking for new owner
The legendary shirt is vacant after Cristiano Ronaldo's exit, with the club weighing up who to give it to. Marco Asensio, Vinicius, a new signing...?
Immediately after sealing his 2009 move to Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo asked his agent, Jorge Mendes: "Will I be able to wear No. 7?" The answer was no. That shirt was in the possession of Raúl González Blanco, a club institution and, at the time, first-team captain.
Cristiano did not complain, and just a year later was able to fulfil his dream of sporting a number which, in addition to Raúl, a whole host of other greats have pulled on throughout Real's illustrious history: the likes of Amancio Amario, Juanito, Emilio Butragueño...
Eight years on, one of the 13-time European champions' highest-profile, and highest-selling, shirts is free once more, and at the Santiago Bernabéu the question is: Who to give to now? After Cristiano, it can't just go to anyone.
Asensio the current favourite for the shirt
The current plan is to offer it to one of Los Blancos' chief stars of the future: Marco Asensio (who at present wears No. 20). Now that he is established as a starter following Cristiano's departure, it would be a way of recognising the step-up that the 22-year-old has made in the squad's pecking order.
Vinicius also in the frame...
