Mourinho "not confident" that De Gea will renew contract

Mourinho says he is "not confident" that former Real Madrid target David De Gea will stay at Old Trafford after this season.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has expressed his doubts about whether goalkeeper David de Gea will renew his contract with the club, but also said it is an issue that does not concern him.

"I am not confident, but I'm also not worried," the United manager told Sky Sports. "I cannot find the word in English, but let's see what happens.”

The Spanish goalkeeper’s contract expires at Old Trafford next summer, and if he does not reach an agreement to extend his deal, he could start talks with other clubs from January.

"Only the club, David and his people can answer that. My comment is only that everyone knows how good he is, how important he is for Manchester United and if the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David,” added Mourinho.

Since joining United from Atlético Madrid in 2011, De Gea has won one Premier League title, one FA Cup and one Europa League and was awarded the Premier League’s golden glove last season.

Real Madrid unlikey to move for De Gea

His qualities have never been overlooked at Real Madrid, where he has been a prime target since 2015. But with Los Blancos signing Thibaut Courtois in the summer, it is unlikely they would move for De Gea should he decide not to renew with United.

As one of the world’s top goalkeepers, there is no doubt the Spanish international will draw the interest of several of Europe’s top clubs if he decides to walk away from United.
