Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the second leg of the Superclásico Copa Libertadores final between fierce rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors, it has been confirmed.

Putin will be in Buenos Aires for the G-20 Summit and will take in the second leg of the all-Argentinean Libertadores final at River’s El Monumental stadium. The game is slated for November 24, although there is some ongoing debate over the exact dates for the two games with the presidents of Boca and River preferring the fixtures to be staged on Sunday. However, Argentina’s football authorities are eager to ensure that the return leg coincides with the G-20 to afford world leaders the opportunity to witness one of the sport’s great derbies in person.

Putin presence at River-Boca "not a security issue"

Buenos Aires’ Minister of Security Martín Ocampo said that the Russian president’s attendance would not be a problem for the city’s police forces. “If he wants to come to the game it will not be an issue. If Putin comes, we will roll out a special security operation in line with the visit of any national leader. I don’t think he’ll be the only one who will want to see the game and it would be wonderful if more presidents come.”
