Fernando Jaúregui, groundsman of Boca Juniors' stadium in Buenos Aires, said earlier in the day that "the pitch will be fine when kick-off time arrives." The match has been suspended.
The groundsman at Boca Juniors’ La Bombonera stadium in Buenos Aires has been left red-faced after he told local media in the face of heavy rain ahead of the Copa Libertadores final first leg: "Don’t worry, the pitch is in good condition. It will be a bit heavy but it will be fine. Nothing is going to be called off.” The game was called off an hour and a half ahead of kick-off.
The historic superclásico between Boca Juniors and River Plate is now scheduled to be played on Sunday at 20:00, however the forecast is for persistant rain up to then.
