Former France international and World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf has warned Neymar that he risks being remembered more for his play-acting than for his undoubted skill on the pitch and has advised the PSG star to stop his “embarrassing” attempts to hoodwink referees for the sake of his reputation.

We are talking about one of the best players in the world, but to see him doing this is embarrassing,” Leboeuf said. “If he carries on like this, he will be remembered for that and not as the great player that he is. If I was a referee, I wouldn’t award him any free kicks because three out of four are just movie acting that he does. That gets to opposing players and wears them down.

I don’t like to say it, but if he had played in my day he’d have ended up in the infirmary after every game for play-acting so much. I’ve never seen Mané, Firmino, Mbappé or Cavani do what he does. And he did it in the middle of a World Cup as well. You have to ask when he will stop.”

After PSG’s Champions League victory over Liverpool, former Reds defender Jamie Carragher, now a TV pundit, echoed Leboeuf’s remarks about the whole PSG team: "It was very frustrating. With Neymar it was even in the first half. We are talking about one of the best players in the world but watching him was embarrassing. Even Thiago Silva, the captain, a centre-back, rolling around in the corner at the end holding his face - this is a great team, PSG, with some great players, they don't need to resort to these tactics"
