Sri Lanka bowler suspended over illegal action
Akila Dananjaya was reported over a suspect bowling action during last month’s Test against England.
Sri Lanka spinner Akila Dananjaya was banned from international cricket on Monday by the International Cricket Council (ICC) due to an illegal bowling action committed during last month’s first Test of the England series.
The sport’s governing body stated that it had found all of Dananjaya’s deliveries to be exceeding the 15 degrees of tolerance permitted under regulations.
"The International Cricket Council today announced that an independent assessment has found the bowling action of Sri Lanka's offspinner Akila Dananjaya to be illegal and, as such he has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect," the ICC said in a statement.
Dananjaya to continue playing in Sri Lanka
The 25-year-old’s suspension will also be recognized by all national cricket federations for domestic cricket events played in their own jurisdiction.
However, he is still able to bowl in domestic cricket events played under the auspices of Sri Lanka Cricket.
"In accordance with Article 11.1 of the ICC Regulations For The Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspect Illegal Bowling Actions, Dananjaya’s international suspension will also be recognised and enforced by all National Cricket Federations for domestic cricket events played in their own jurisdiction," read the ICC’s statement.
"However, according to Article 11.5 of the Regulations and with the consent of the Sri Lanka Cricket, Dananjaya may be able to bowl in domestic cricket events played under the auspices of the SLC."
Dananjaya has played five Tests for his country since making his debut against Bangladesh in February, bagging 27 wickets in this format. He has also achieved 46 wickets in 30 ODIs and 14 in 16 T20Is.
The Sri Lankan must undergo remedial work on his action in order to be allowed to resume bowling in international cricket.
